Life#
Ahmed Refik Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ahmed Refik also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Antalya in 1900/01, at about 31, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 31 or older. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Ahmed Refik in Antalya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1901 to 1906 the annual entries place Ahmed Refik in Istanbul.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Antalya, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
