Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1892/93, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Nuri in the same post, official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), in Galata.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 413 in 1905/06, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Galata, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 51,408 kuruş, 58 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
