Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Rıza Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1888/89, Mehmet Rıza began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet Rıza as an official (Memur) in Galata, where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Istanbul in 1901/02, in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi) and Izmir (İzmir) in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 600 in 1902/03, as Merkez Memuru in Izmir, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 26,700 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
