Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). İsmail Hakkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 25 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1892/93 to 1905/06 places İsmail Hakkı in the same office, documents office (Evrak Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 25 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 350 in 1904/05, in the Evrak Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 34,860 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
