Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1892/93 to 1897/98 places Hasan Tahsin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), from 1895/96 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 100 in 1897/98, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less.
