Life#
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1888/89, İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1892/93, to 1905/06, every annual entry places İsmail Hakkı in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 330 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when one in three paid officials earned less.
