Life#
Born in Gediz in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Akif Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). At about 16, in 1885/86, Ahmet Akif began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Gediz, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Ahmet Akif in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Gedos. Ahmet Akif then moved to Simav in 1894/95 and Balıkesir in 1895/96, then Uşak from 1896 to 1905. The last post was in Gedos again in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Gedos, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
