Life#
Born in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Mehmet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1884/85, Mehmet began work in Kahramanmaraş, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mehmet in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1895/96. The last posts were in Feke from 1896 to 1903, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 500 in 1896/97, as 3. Müdür in Feke, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
