Life#
Mahmut Şükrü Efendi was born in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mahmut Şükrü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1891/92, Mahmut Şükrü began work in Bilecik, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mahmut Şükrü in Basrul harir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1896/97. The annual lists then follow Mahmut Şükrü to Palu from 1897 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Darende in 1905/06.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 540 in 1897/98, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Palu, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
