Life#
Born in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Halit Hamdi Efedi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Halit Hamdi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Halit Hamdi began work in Kahramanmaraş in 1889/90, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Halit Hamdi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kahramanmaraş, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1896/97. The last post was in Süleymanlı (Zeytun) in 1897/98.
