Life#
Born in Burgas (Burgaz) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Raif Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). İbrahim Raif had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places İbrahim Raif in Istanbul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Raif to Balıkesir, Istanbul and Beykoz from 1896 to 1901. The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1901 to 1907.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 14 years the salary stood below the first, 140 kuruş against 300. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 29,520 kuruş, 35 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
