Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Hafız İsmail Hakkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a steward (kethüda). İsmail Hakkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 11, in 1885/86, İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1892/93, to 1905/06, every annual entry places İsmail Hakkı in the same office, control office (Kontrol Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 630 in 1903/04, the peak, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
