Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ahmet Hilmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet Hilmi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1890/91, Ahmet Hilmi began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 20 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1892/93 to 1904/05 places Ahmet Hilmi in the same post, Tetkik Memuru, in Istanbul, the birthplace.
