Life

Born in Damascus (Şam) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ahmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Tevfik also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.

At about 18, in 1892/93, Ahmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Ahmet Tevfik in Istanbul as a policeman (Polis). Ahmet Tevfik then moved to Beyoğlu in 1893/94, as a sergeant (Çavuş). The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1894 to 1900, with a rise to police commissioner, third class (3. Sınıf Polis Komiseri).

The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 400 in 1894/95, the peak, as 3. Sınıf Polis Komiseri in Beirut, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
