Life#
Hüsnü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüsnü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hüsnü began work in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1892/93 to 1903/04 every annual entry places Hüsnü in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1895/96 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 560 in 1901/02, as Mukayyit in Istanbul, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 48,060 kuruş, 67 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
