Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1894/95, to 1910/11, every annual entry places the official in the same post, registry clerk (Mukayyit), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 550 in 1910/11, as Mukayyit in Istanbul, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 17 years of salary come to 59,700 kuruş, 62 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
