Life#
Ahmet Vehbi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1889/90, Ahmet Vehbi began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. From 1894/95 to 1902/03 every annual entry places Ahmet Vehbi in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1900/01 in the Hukuk Kalemi.
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 350 in 1902/03, in the Hukuk Kalemi in Istanbul, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 21,600 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
