Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Ahmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet Tevfik had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1892/93, Ahmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 25 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1905/06 places Ahmet Tevfik in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
