Life#
Hasan Basri Efendi was born in Çanakkale in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hasan Basri also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hasan Basri began work in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 22, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1909/10 places Hasan Basri in Istanbul, first in the foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi), from 1906/07 as Fen Musaviri, from 1908/09 as an assistant director (Müdür Muavini) and from 1909/10 as an inspector (Müfettiş).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 3,000 in 1909/10, as Müfettiş in Istanbul, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 158,640 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
