Life#
Yakub Sabri Efendi was born in Çanakkale in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Yakub Sabri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Yakub Sabri began work in Canik in 1883/84, at about 13, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Yakub Sabri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Canik. Yakub Sabri then moved to Merzifon in 1893/94 and Bursa in 1895/96, then back to Merzifon from 1896 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). Next came Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) and Beytulharemeyn from 1899 to 1902. The last post was in Burdur in 1903/04. The farthest post, Beytulharemeyn, lay about 2,450 km from Çanakkale, and fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 800 in 1900/01, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beytulharemeyn, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 500. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
