Life#
Born in Arapgir in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Süleyman Sırrı Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Süleyman Sırrı began work in Bafra in 1887/88, at about 13, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Süleyman Sırrı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Preveza (Preveze). Süleyman Sırrı then moved to Merzifon from 1897 to 1904. The last post was in Samsun in 1904/05, with a rise to official of a telegraph or post office (Merkez Memuru).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 500 in 1904/05, as Merkez Memuru in Samsun, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
