Life#
Necip Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1875/76, at about 20, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Necip as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Arta (Narda). Next came Neapoli in 1881/82, then Ioannina from 1882 to 1888. The annual lists then follow Necip to Metsovo (Meçova), Cemara, Preveza (Preveze) and Shkodër (İşkodra), four places in nine years, then back to Arta from 1897 to 1900. The last posts were in Zenica from 1900 to 1904 and Magora from 1904 to 1906. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 500 in 1888/89, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Metsovo, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 145,320 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06; the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
