Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1854/55 (AH 1271), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Çarşamba in 1875/76, at about 20, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Ali Rıza in Komotini (Gümülcine) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Az Zaydiyah in 1883/84, then Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) from 1884 to 1889. Ali Rıza then moved to Sana'a (Sana) from 1889 to 1892, then Manakhah (Menaha) from 1892 to 1901, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) and to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1899/1900. The last post was in Struga (Ustruga) in 1902/03. Al Hudaydah, about 2,950 km from Trabzon, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 1,500 in 1899/1900, as 1. Müdür in Manakhah, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 228,984 kuruş, 1.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
