Life#
Born in Kirim in 1845/46 (AH 1262), Mehmet Ata Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Karantina Memuru". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mehmet Ata also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Turkish and spoke French.
Work began in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 24, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mehmet Ata in Istanbul as an official (Memur). Mehmet Ata then moved to İzmit and Istanbul from 1872 to 1877, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1872/73, then Büyükdere from 1877 to 1883. Next came Anadolukavağı, Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde), Zefice and Lemnos (Limni), four places in nine years, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1885/86. The last posts were in Kütahya from 1892 to 1895. The farthest post, Al Hudaydah, lay about 3,450 km from Kirim, and 29 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 1,500 in 1885/86, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Al Hudaydah, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
