Life#
Born in Gelibolu in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Agnam Muduru". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Gelibolu in 1866/67, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gelibolu, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1872/73. Hüseyin Hüsnü then moved to Büyükçekmece (Çekmece-i Kebir) from 1873 to 1890, with a rise to official (Memur). From 1890 to 1906 every annual entry places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Rumelihisarı, first as Memur, from 1892/93 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 900 in 1901/02, as 2. Müdür in Rumelihisarı, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
