Life#
Yanko Efendi was born in Gelibolu in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi). Yanko knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Gelibolu in 1866/67, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Yanko in Gaza (Gazze) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Yanko then moved back to Gelibolu, the birthplace, from 1869 to 1876, then Keşan, Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Kavala from 1876 to 1881, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in 1879/80. The last posts were in Bitola (Manastır) from 1881 to 1883.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 600 in 1880/81, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Kavala, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1883/84. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Gelibolu doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by OSMAN UMUT NAL (2026) probably refers to Yanko, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and a place of service agree.
