Life#
Kostaki Efendi was born in Samokov (Samakov) in 1849/50 (AH 1266), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Kostaki also wrote Bulgarian and Greek (Rum).
Kostaki began work in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 25, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Kostaki as an official (Memur) in Skopje (Üsküp). For 1887 to 1892 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Bursa from 1892 to 1898, first as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru), from 1897/98 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to 700 in 1897/98, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Bursa, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
