Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Seyyit Safa Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Seyyit Safa began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Seyyit Safa in Edirne as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru), where the entries run to 1896/97. Seyyit Safa then moved to Emirgan from 1897 to 1901. The last posts were in Sadaret from 1901 to 1906.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Sadaret, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
