Life#
Born in Batumi (Batum) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Yusuf Ziya Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Yusuf Ziya as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Edirne. The last posts were in Timurtas from 1893 to 1897.
The salary went from 450 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 550 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Timurtas, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 495 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1896/97. Yusuf Ziya probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Batumlu Osmanlı âlimleri" by ORHAN EKER (2017) (the name and the birthplace agree).
