Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). The official had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1889/90, the official began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came Timurtas in 1894/95, then Edirne from 1895 to 1900. The last posts were in Kosova in 1900/01, as Mandapost Memuru, and Thessaloniki in 1901/02 and Edirne again in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 900 in 1902/03, as Başmemur in Edirne, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
