Life#
Yasef Efendi was born in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Jewish (Musevi) community. Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Didymoteicho in 1877/78, at about 14, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 142 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Yasef as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa). Next came Soufli in 1881/82, then a return to Didymoteicho, the birthplace, from 1882 to 1885, with a rise to Nahiye Memuru. The annual lists then follow Yasef to Zliten and Svilengrad from 1885 to 1889, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1885/86. From 1889 to 1903 every annual entry places Yasef in Edirne.
Pay rose from 142 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 800 in 1885/86, as 2. Müdür in Zliten, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Dimetokalı memurlar" by SİBEL EDEMEN (2025) probably refers to Yasef, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and second number, the birth year and a place of service agree.
