Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ali Rıza began work in Diyarbakır in 1879/80, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Ali Rıza in Cizre as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Ali Rıza then moved to Diyarbakır in 1887/88, then Havran from 1888 to 1895. The last posts were in Çemişgezek from 1895 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1896/97.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 500 in 1896/97, as 3. Müdür in Çemişgezek, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
