Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Süleyman Faik Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1883/84, Süleyman Faik began work in Kemaliye, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Süleyman Faik in Ayvalık as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1892/93. The annual lists then follow Süleyman Faik to Erzincan from 1893 to 1896, then Kurucay from 1896 to 1903. The last posts were in Elazığ from 1903 to 1908.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 500 in 1893/94, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
Places in order of time#
