Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a lieutenant or candidate official (mülazım). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Kemaliye in 1893/94, at about 21, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for nine years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1902/03, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Ali Rıza in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Elazığ.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 500 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Elazığ, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less.
