Life#
İbrahim Hakkı Efendi was born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Mazgirt in 1893/94, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places İbrahim Hakkı in Refahiye as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow İbrahim Hakkı to Erzincan in 1897/98 and Ağrı in 1898/99, then Başkale from 1899 to 1904. The last post was in Muş in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1897/98, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when one in three paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. In all, nine years of salary come to 33,600 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
