Life#
Mehmet Emin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Emin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 23, in 1894/95, Mehmet Emin began work in Edirne, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet Emin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Edirne, where the entries run to 1898/99. The last posts were in Feres (Ferecik) and Gelibolu from 1899 to 1904 and Edirne again in 1904/05.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 380 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Feres, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less.
