Life#
Hafız Halil Hami Efendi was born in Niğde in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Halil Hami also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Halil Hami began work in 1888/89, at about 17, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Halil Hami as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Adana. Halil Hami then moved back to Niğde, the birthplace, from 1896 to 1901. The last posts were in Manavgat from 1901 to 1903 and Isparta in 1903/04.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Adana, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
