Life#
Born in Burdur in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ali Nihat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Burdur in 1883/84, at about 10, with 13 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; 9 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 13 years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 33 started at 10 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ali Nihat in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). For 1896 to 1898 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Ali Nihat to Yozgat in 1898/99. The last posts were in Yenişehir from 1899 to 1904.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Adana, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
