Life#
Salih Faik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Adana in 1894/95, at about 30, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 30 or older. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Salih Faik in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The lists have no entry for 1896 to 1898. The last posts were in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) from 1898 to 1902 and Erzincan from 1903 to 1905.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 550 in 1904/05, as Merkez Memuru in Erzincan, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
