Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Kadri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1882/83, Ahmet Kadri began work in Mezraa, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 360 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Ahmet Kadri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mezraa, where the entries run to 1891/92. Ahmet Kadri then moved to six places in 11 years, from Koyulhisar to Rashaya (Raşeya), with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1897/98. The last post was in Ajloun (Aclun) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 360 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 540 in 1897/98, as 3. Müdür in Yarpuz, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. After the last annual entry, for 1904/05, the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
