Life

Mustafa İzzet Efendi was born in Niğde in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa İzzet also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.

Work began in İnebolu in 1884/85, at about 21, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Mustafa İzzet in Mezraa as an official (Memur). The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1894. In 1894/95 the lists place Mustafa İzzet in Diyarbakır, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru).

Pay rose from 190 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as Merkez Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
