Life#
Born in Niğde in 1856/57 (AH 1273), İzzet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
İzzet began work in Niğde in 1874/75, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with İzzet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Adana, where the entries run to 1878/79. İzzet then moved to Aleppo in 1880/81, then Silifke from 1881 to 1886. Next came Ermenek from 1886 to 1891, then Tarsus in 1891/92, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The annual lists then follow İzzet to Antakya from 1892 to 1897, then Kahramanmaraş in 1897/98. İzzet then moved back to Aleppo from 1898 to 1902, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1899/1900, then Diyarbakır, Elazığ and Erzurum from 1902 to 1906. The last post was in Sivas in 1906/07. In all, 11 places, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 1,200 in 1899/1900, as 1. Müdür in Aleppo, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
