Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Yusuf Vasfi Efendi was the child of a finance director (mal müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Yusuf Vasfi began work in Antalya in 1888/89, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Yusuf Vasfi in Antalya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came a return to Aleppo, the birthplace, from 1892 to 1902, with a rise to acting director (Müdür Vekili) in 1901/02. The last posts were in Gaziantep (Antep) and Antakya from 1902 to 1908 and Van in 1909/10.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 1,500 in 1909/10, the peak, as Müfettiş in Van, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 175,680 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
