Life#
Mıgırdıç Efendi was born in Bafra in 1869/70 (AH 1286), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Mıgırdıç also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Samsun in 1886/87, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mıgırdıç in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mıgırdıç to Trabzon and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1889 to 1892. The last posts were in Skopje (Üsküp) from 1892 to 1895.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 400 in 1894/95, the peak, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Skopje, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 22,920 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
