Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Vensan Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Vensan had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 18, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1891/92, every annual entry places Vensan in the same office, statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 150 in 1889/90, the peak, in the İstatistik Kalemi in Istanbul, when 5 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 6,000 kuruş, 25 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1891/92.
