Life#
Born in Edirne in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Ovadis Kadikyan came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani); Ovadis Kadikyan also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ovadis Kadikyan began work in Istanbul in 1884/85, at about 31, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 31 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1887/88, to 1902/03, every annual entry places Ovadis Kadikyan in the same office, statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), in Istanbul.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 500 in 1899/1900, the peak, in the İstatistik Kalemi in Istanbul, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
