Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hafız İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of an imam. İsmail Hakkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1887/88, İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 62 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1892/93, to 1908/09, every annual entry places İsmail Hakkı in the same office, statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 62 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 470 in 1906/07, the peak, in the İstatistik Kalemi in Istanbul, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 17 years of salary come to 51,096 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
