Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Hafız İbrahim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a policeman (polis). İbrahim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1887/88, İbrahim began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1892/93, to 1905/06, every annual entry places İbrahim in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 30 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 250 in 1905/06, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 22,380 kuruş, 27 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
