Life#
Rıfat Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 62 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1901/02 places Rıfat in the same office, statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 62 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 200 in 1899/1900, the peak, in the İstatistik Kalemi in Istanbul, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 19,344 kuruş, 29 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
Career and salary#
Log scale: equal steps are equal ratios. The median of the same title is drawn for the years in which at least 5 officials with that title had a salary, and the median of the same province for the years in which at least 5 officials were paid in the province of the official's salary that year.
