Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Hasan Sabri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Hasan Sabri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Adliye Sicil Kalemi in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Hasan Sabri in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the Adliye Sicil Kalemi. The lists have no entry for 1893 to 1895. From 1896 to 1906 the annual entries place Hasan Sabri again in Istanbul.
The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 400 in 1895/96, the peak, in the Kuyud Odasi, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 200 kuruş. Over 13 years the salaries add up to 36,600 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
